The history of Dubai

Dubai refers to one of the seven emirate of the United Arab Emirates, and also refers to the largest and main city in Dubai,
Dubai City. Records show evidence of the town of Dubai all the way back to 1799. Because of its close proximity to India, Dubai became an important port of call for tradesmen traveling throughout the area. In 1820, the sheikh of Dubai signed the British sponsored General Treaty of Peace (otherwise known as the General Maritime Treaty). However, the Al Maktoum dynasty of the Ban Yas tribe left their settlement in 1833 and overthrew the town of Dubai without any resistance. Dubai, at that moment became a newly independent emirate, and was from then on at serious odds with the neighboring emirate of Abu Dhabi. In 1835, all of the Trucial States including Dubai signed a truce with Britain known as the Perpetual Maritime Truce. Again, in 1892, Dubai brought itself under the protection of Britain and kept out the Otoman Turks, by signing an exclusive agreement. Because of its location on the route to India, Dubai was a very important port of call for tradesmen traveling along the route. Dubai's govering rulers encouraged and supported trade and commerce with the traveling tradesmen. Because of this, the foreign tradesmen (especially those from India) favored Dubai among its neighbors. Even into the 1930s, Dubai was known internationally for all of its pearl exportations. When the Gulf Rupee devalued greatly in 1966, Dubai and Qatar joined together to set up a new money system known as the Qatar/Dubai riyal. Then, when oil was discovered 120 kilometres from Dubai's coast, the emirate of Dubai granted oil concessions. After their former protector Britain left the Persian Gulf in 1971, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and five additional emirates formed together the United Arab Emirates. In 1973, they joined together to create a unique uniform currency to be used throughout the UAE: the UAE dirham.

The population of Dubai

Dubai's population is currently over 1.5 million residents, and is expected to reach 3.1 million by the year 2030. Out of the total
number of residents, 74.86 per cent are male and 25.14 per cent are female. Part of the reason for this is the increasing numbers of building projects in Dubai.

The weather in Dubai

Get ready for some heat, and at the same time some snow (inside) and some great air conditioning! Between November and March, (technically known as winter) the weather is sub tropical, warm and sunny and not too hot. During winter the temperatures and weather in Dubai linger at about 23 degrees C. However, during the summer months, the temperatures in Dubai can climb up into the 40s C, and the water temperature off Dubai's coast can soar to 37 degrees C. If you are traveling to Dubai during the summer hot months, be sure to drink plenty of water, wear a hat, and use sunscreen to avoid sunburn and heat stroke.
